GAE Community,
With the recent announcement of MCSD schools opening virtually, we wanted to let you know that we have been preparing for this possibility for months and we are ready to launch! While nothing can compare to having our students face-to-face learning in school, please be assured that our teachers have been researching, collaborating, and building their virtual platforms. We’ve learned a lot since March, and believe you will be pleased with the outcome. Here are a few things you can expect from us in the very near future:
At GAE, we’ve made it our personal mission to be the best at what we do. We are ready for virtual instruction. It is going to be fun, meaningful, and targeted. When the time comes for us to return to face-to-face instruction, we are ready to make a smooth transition with safety as the top priority.
See you soon!

GAE Family and Friends,
In spite of the challenges we are all facing, I hope this message finds you and your family in good health and positive spirit. In March, as the country shut down, and schools turned to fully virtual instruction, you had to quickly learn to balance your children’s education with your own work responsibilities, and in some cases, search for a new job altogether. I speak for all of our teachers and support staff when I say that we’ve seen your efforts, we’ve felt your struggles, and we stand with you 100 percent. Your children are the reason we’re here, and we will stop at nothing to support you in supporting them.
I wish I could say that we’re going to resume normal operations in 2020-2021, and everything will function as it did before Spring Break, but we all know that’s simply not the case. When we do return to school, things are going to look quite different, but our commitment to you will remain as strong as ever. Many of our teachers have already returned to school to adjust lunch/recess schedules, rearrange classroom furniture to enable social distancing, and to find pre-emptive solutions for questions that are sure to arise. We don’t have all of the answers, but we are working diligently to prioritize health and safety for all students and staff.
If you have not already had a chance, please become familiar with the attached documents. The MCSD Back to School Task Force has created a comprehensive plan. It will answer a lot of your questions and will hopefully alleviate some concerns, while providing you with options for your child’s delivery of instruction. Our job at the school level is to take the plan and customize it to meet the unique needs of GAE.
The question on everyone’s mind is, “Will the school year start off with face-to-face instruction, or will we continue with virtual instruction?” The short answer is, Gerald Adams Elementary, and all of MCSD, will follow the guidance of the Health Department. If the Health Department tells us it is safe to return to school, we will do so with an abundance of caution. If they tell us that it’s too risky for students and staff to return, we are ready to deploy virtual instruction until it is safe.
On behalf of the entire GAE family, thank you for your partnership. We look forward to seeing you and your children in the near future. Stay safe.
Kyle Sheer
Principal

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Current Gerald Adams assistant principal, Dr. Kyle Sheer, has been chosen as the school’s next principal, according to Superintendent Mark Porter. Sheer, will take over for current principal Dr. Fran Herrin, who moves to the district’s Executive Director of Teaching and Learning role beginning 2020-2021 school year.
“Dr. Sheer has been a stellar educator in Monroe County for the past 12 years,” Porter said. “He is a natural leader, who encourages growth and development among his staff and students, alike. His exemplary work as GAE assistant principal, makes him the ideal candidate for the job.”
Sheer, an Ohio native, came to Monroe County in 2008, after five years as a reading teacher and literacy coach in Pinellas County. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Ohio University (Athens), as well as a Doctorate in Educational Leadership/ Higher Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Sheer spent his first five years in the Monroe County School District at Horace O’Bryant School as a middle school reading and American history teacher, also serving as a team leader and on the Building Level Planning Team (BLPT). Sheer’s devotion and commitment made him a student and staff favorite, earning him Teacher of the Year and KW Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Quarter during his time at the school.
Sheer has spent the last six years as Gerald Adam’s assistant principal, where he is revered for his dedication, focus, and calm demeanor, while purposely ensuring that each individual student can learn and develop as a whole child. During his time at GAE, Sheer has played an important role in the planning and implementation of many of the school’s programs, such as the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program, which has earned the prestigious Gold Status since its inception and StoryBook Treasures, a non-profit literacy program that has put thousands of free books into students' homes. Sheer was also instrumental in the planning, construction, and transition to the new school building, which was awarded the Florida Education Facilities Planners Association (FEFPA) 1st place design.
The 2016-2017 MCSD Assistant Principal of the Year is praised by his staff for always encouraging and supporting teachers and staff to be the best educators they can possibly be.
“Dr. Sheer has been an asset to GAE since the day he started,” stated GAE teacher and BLPT member, Ashley Henriquez. “Each day he proves his dedication to the students and staff of GAE, through leadership, compassion, fairness, consistency, and a listening ear. His main vision and focus is always on what benefits our students.”
Veteran teacher, Katie Catena, has also worked with Sheer since he started at GAE and is excited that he will be the school’s new principal. “Dr. Sheer exhibits leadership skills that benefit the staff, parents, and students of Gerald Adams,” Catena said. “He embraces the cultural diversity that represents our school and will continue to be an invaluable asset as our principal.”
In addition to the support of his GAE students, parents and staff, Sheer has the glowing support of his principal and mentor, Dr. Fran Herrin, who is more than confident in handing him the reins. “I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Sheer for six years. During this time, Kyle has made a true impact on Gerald Adams School,” Herrin stated. “He is caring, genuine and has a true love of students and our staff. He is passionate about learning and providing all students with the optimal opportunities for success. I am thrilled that Dr. Sheer will lead this amazing staff to continued success.”
Sheer and his wife Sarah, also a MCSD educator, have two children, Hudson (age 4) and Kennedy (age 2). He is honored to be selected as the new principal of the school where his children will start attending soon.
“I am excited to be entrusted to carry on the long, rich tradition of Gerald Adams. Whole-child education has been, and will always be, the cornerstone of our school,” Sheer said. “We have a powerful team of educators who share an appreciation of diversity and believe that their students’ potential is limitless. I consider myself lucky to be part of this school community.”
Theresa Axford, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning and incoming Superintendent has full confidence in Sheer’s ability to lead GAE. “Dr. Sheer has a true heart for teaching and learning,” Axford stated. “GAE will continue to flourish under his leadership.”

Monroe County Public School's Head Start program is a federal grant program under the Monroe County School District. The district encompasses over 100 miles of island with 4 sites from Key Largo to Key West. Head Start offers free preschool for income eligible children and a percentage of children with disabilities to prepare them for Kindergarten and school success.
Children who attend Head Start participate in school-readiness curriculum that includes literacy, language, science, mathematics, and social-emotional development. They also receive medical and dental services, have healthy meals and enjoy playing safely indoors and outdoors.
In addition to the educational services, family involvement is at the core of our success. Parents/Guardians are provided with the unique opportunity in Head Start to participate in the program and planning decision-making process. Each parent/guardian who has a child enrolled in the Head Start program is automatically a member of the parent committee group at the respective center. Parent/Guardians are also elected by their peers to serve on policy council.

Stop Bullying on the Spot
When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior(s) they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time.
Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategies.
Here are some websites for strategies:

Dear Families,
Summer is a fun and exciting time for everyone to enjoy the outdoors, spend time with families and
friends and simply relax. It is also a perfect opportunity to encourage students to read!
Over the summer, many students experience the summer slide, which can rob them of gains they
made the previous school year. Children who do not read over the summer can lose more than two
months of reading achievement. Unfortunately, summer reading loss is cumulative.
Together, we can help your student avoid the summer slide! Did you know that your student has
access to myON, a personalized collection of more than 5,800 digital books to read over the
summer on computers, laptops and other devices anytime, anywhere? myON contains books for
every age, interest and reading level that will keep them engaged and learning all summer long!
To help encourage reading this summer, myON has created a national reading contest to motivate
kids to read and will reward top readers with cool prizes. The theme of this year’s contest is
Reading is a BLAST this summer with myON. Please encourage your student to read as much as
possible - they will be entered for a chance to win by reading 10 or more books!
Be sure to follow myON on Facebook (myONFanClub) and @myONreader for important updates
and special events during the summer. Go to https://support.myon.com/resources-tutorials/
overview to learn more about myON this summer.
We hope you enjoy the 2018 Reading is a BLAST with myON Summer Reading Program!
Happy reading!

The students have three works of art being displayed in the art show. Make sure to walk around the entire school to see all of the creative projects.
Two students will be chosen for the Artist of the Year. This award is given to students that have shown their love for art through their exemplary projects, work ethic, and creativity that they have shown throughout elementary school. They will receive a special art trophy and will get their artwork put on permanent display at GAE. This show will begin at 6;00 PM before the musical performance in the cafeteria.
Each student created a fantasy themed art project throughout the year. They used neon colors to create their artwork. For the art show, we gathered all of those art projects and transformed the stage to become a magical Fantasy Land installation. Come experience a new look on artwork!
Have you always wanted a pet? Well come make your very own Pet Rock! You get to use your creativity and design exactly how you want your pet rock to look like.
Bring your friends and family to take a memorable photo of the Art Extravaganza. Watch and see how the photograph turns into a painting by using a fun iPad App. Also there will be famous works of art throughout the ages that you can put your face in, snap a photo, and become a part of the masterpiece.
Help make a work of art for our new school! We will be creating a mural that will become a beautiful art piece for the new school in the future. Located in the Art Room.
In the art room there will be the new 3D printers creating 3 dimensional artwork using technology. A big THANK YOU to the CFFFK Community Foundation of the Florida Keys for awarding the art room the grant to purchase the 3D Printers for the students to use in the future!
There will be guest artists around the school creating artwork. This is a great way for the students to observe a professional artist at work.
There will be a Dinner to help fundraise for the Art Program. Come purchase a delicious meal and enjoy the GAE Choir sing. Located in the Cafeteria.
