Florida Standards Transition - Parent Information
Welcome to Charting the Course to Florida Standards!
Monroe County School District Staff is working to make the transition from the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and FCAT to Florida Standards and its new assessments as smooth as possible for students, staff and parents. A successful transition will support the district's goal that all students will graduate from high school with the skills they need to be successful in college and careers.
In English and language arts/reading, this means three major changes. Students will continue to read and write, but in addition to stories and literature, they will read more texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas including science and social studies. They will read more challenging texts and be asked questions that will require them to refer back to what they have read. There will also be an increased emphasis on building a strong vocabulary so that students can read and understand challenging material.
In mathematics, students will be taught to think about multiple ways to solve problems and to gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts by breaking them down step by step.
There are several resources to assist parents in understanding the Florida Standards and what they mean for their children. These resources include:- Key items that children should be learning in English, language arts/reading, and mathematics in each grade
- Activities that parents can do at home to support their children's learning
- Methods for helping parents build stronger relationships with their children's teachers
- Tips for planning for college and career
