UTM and District reach tentative contract agreement

Tentative bargaining agreement reachedThe United Teachers of Monroe (UTM) and the Monroe County School District (MCSD) began contract negotiations for the upcoming school year as soon as the 2022 Florida legislative session came to a close on March 30, 2022.  After just seven (7) collective bargaining sessions, the two teams were able to reach several tentative agreements including compensation for the 700 + teachers and support personnel of the Monroe County School District.

“Our goal was to have an agreement for the next two school years to present to our members before the end of the 2021-2022 school year.  As of Friday night, our collaborative process resulted in salary increases and contract language which will improve our working conditions for the outstanding teachers, transportation, food service and maintenance employees of Monroe County, “President of UTM, Holly Hummell-Gorman stated. Superintendent Theresa Axford was elated that the negotiations were completed by this time of year.  She stated, “I am so proud of the Negotiations Team led by Harry Russell, Executive Director of Personnel and Instructional Leadership and Holly Hummell-Gorman, President of United Teachers of Monroe for the amazing work that they have done during the spring.  Both Harry and Holly are skilled negotiators who know how to lead their teams to support students, teachers and staff in the best possible way.  Harry Russell stated, “It is important that MCSD continues to offer competitive salaries for all of our employees so we can recruit and retain the best and brightest who contribute to the excellent education system that our stakeholders expect.” MCSD Chairman John Dick stated, “With so much uncertainty about the current economy, and having the contracts settled before the end of the year, this will allow our staff to plan their personnel budget for the upcoming school year.  Congratulations to the bargaining teams for a job well done!

The tentative agreements will be presented by UTM to its members for a ratification vote on May 31st.  The agreements will then go before the Monroe County School Board for their approval.  The implementation of the approved agreements will become effective July 1, 2022 through June 30th, 2024.
