Nine Coral Shores students competed in the Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta Region V Math Competition on Saturday, March 4, at Cypress Bay High School in Weston. We left Coral Shores at 6 AM Saturday so we could be there on time. Over 1,000 students from South Florida competed in math subjects of which students are currently enrolled. The competition is rigorous, as many large (and several private) schools have a class that meets daily as an elective just to prepare for these competitions. Students competed in an individual test and in a set of team questions. The Calculus team came in 16th out of 35 teams. The Statistics team came in 11th out of 15 teams.
Coral Shores was the only Monroe County team at this competition. These students represented our county well. I am proud of this group of students, who also tutor students in math after school on Mondays and Thursdays. It would be great if we could recognize them as GEMS at a future school board meeting.
