Veteran Educator and CSHS graduate takes the helm in 2021-2022

Monroe County School District Superintendent Theresa Axford announced that veteran educator, Laura Lietaert, will be the next Coral Shores High School (CSHS) principal.   Lietaert, who is the current principal of Key Largo School (KLS), will take over for retiring principal, Blake Fry beginning the 2021-2022 school year.

“We are thrilled to have Ms. Lietaert lead Coral Shores High School,” Axford said.  “Her years of innovative leadership and dedication will continue to propel them in their quest for excellence.  I appreciate Laura’s work in building relationships at Key Largo School and I know she will use these same skills to support Coral Shores High.”

Lietaert grew up in the Upper Keys, attending Key Largo Elementary, Plantation Key School and Coral Shores High School which left her well prepared for college.  She earned scholarships to attend the University of Miami and Florida International University, where she completed her Bachelor’s degree.  Lietaert then completed her Masters of Education in Educational Leadership while teaching full time at KLS.  In the past 27 years, Lietaert has served KLS in the capacity of teacher, assistant principal and principal.

Known for her willingness to take on new challenges, Lietaert spearheaded her school’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) initiative, earning KLS the highly distinctive title of “model school.” Her strong ties with the community have brought on a multitude of opportunities for her students and families.

Lietaert’s many valuable assets include her approachability. She welcomes input from students, parents, and the community members that are such an integral part of the school system where her four children attended.  Her daughter, Stephanie is currently a teacher at Plantation Key School.  Sons Robert, John and Bernie are currently serving in the U. S. Coast Guard.

“The foundations provided to me by the teachers at Key Largo School, Plantation Key School and Coral Shores set me up for success,” Lietaert said.  “This is my opportunity to give back to a school and community that has given me so much.  I’m proud to be a Hurricane once again.  Go Canes!”
